Ghislain Uhry - Rencontres

Portraits of acquaintances ; often these meetings leading to shared projects : Jean Genet, Jean-Louis Barrault, Madeleine Renaud, Thérèse Giehse-Lawrence Durrell... Sometimes, these coming-togethers are illustrated by landscapes: La Montagne Saint-Victoire for André Masson, the Mont Ventoux for René Char or the Anjou for Julien Gracq…

Born in Poland in 1932 of Alsatian and Austrian parents, Ghislain Uhry decided to become a painter after passing his exams at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs de Paris. His first exhibition was at the Galerie de Seine in 1958 followed by shows all over Europe at prestigious galleries such as Claude Bernard, Jan Krugier, Gimpel, Claude Aubry, John Couper…

In 1964, he designed the scenery and costumes of the Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss for the Spoleto Festival directed by the young film director Louis Malle who later used Uhry as artistic Director on the films Lacombe Lucien and Black Moon. From 1975 to 1986, he worked as designer for a dozen productions at the celebrated theatre company, Compagnie Renaud-Barrault, including Angelo, Madame de Sade and the Théâtre de Foire.

From 1976 to 1978, he co-wrote the script of the film La Nuit venue. In 1984, he designed the scenery and costumes for Lawrence Durrell's only play Un Faust Irlandais.

A close friend of André Masson since 1958, he lived and worked on his property in Aix-en-Provence from 1978 to 1984, while working on many Opera productions for the Opera in Marseille such as Les Noces de Figaro, Wozzeck, Elektra, Lohengrin, the Magic Flute and Pelleas and Mélisande.
He divides his time between the Anjou region of France and his Paris studio.
