In the painting Les Las, exhibited at the Salon of 1897, Adler was inspired by a sentence in Zola's novel L’Assommoir : « They march without a laugh, or a word uttered to a comrade, with sunken grey cheeks, their faces turned towards Paris that devoured one by one […] ».
